Youth Debate Club

Become confident in speaking in front of others. Students will learn how to do research and how to identify fake news. Debates will help students to become open minded, critical thinkers. Problem solving in a team, persuading opponents, but also finding compromises are skills students will need for the challenges of the 21st century.

Club Experience

What is a debate? - Essentially, a debate is an argument with rules.

Are you interested in politics, sports, art, history, environment, society? Knowing how to gather the most important points about a topic and delivering it to an audience is a skill that will benefit you throughout your life. Debate skills are useful when interviewing for jobs, networking, having meetings, and giving presentations. Learning the art of communication and persuasion comes in handy in lots of different life situations. You will become confident speaking in front of people you don’t know when telling them something you feel passionate about in a way they will understand.

About the Club Teacher

My name is Torsten and I’m a father to three wonderful homeschooled children. My original background is in journalism but I also worked many, many years in education with children and families (UK NVQ Level III). I am passionate about outdoor learning fun! That’s why I founded the “Wild Dads UK” outdoor group and also facilitated outdoor learning groups for the Permaculture Association UK.

I was born in East Germany (GDR) many moons ago and have been living in six countries. Learning about new cultures is something I find very fascinating – it’s shaping my life and thinking.

I am curious about so many topics and subjects and have realized that learning never stops. I love video editing, debates, team building, spending time outdoors, cooking, history, playing with my kids, swimming, running, reading, being silly and so much more.

My motto: We come across challenges every day. Let’s take them on with curiosity and creativity.

Other Resources

Students will get access to resources when joining the club.

Time Required

We will meet for one hour per week for live debates, research and group work. It should be noted that debating is about practicing. Having a conversation with a friend, sibling or parent can be a debate as well. It’s not always about persuading others or winning a debate, instead exchanging ideas and thoughts and finding solutions together can take us all forward. You can also watch how other people debate. You’ll find lots of debates online or when you watch TV.
