Whether you want to apply for a job or a scholarship, a portfolio is your best representative!
In this nanocourse, I will walk you through the steps of setting up a static website which will be your first business card. Using a couple of open source tools, some stunning pictures, and need-to-know facts will help you be seen and heard by future prospects.
In this course, we’ll help you create a portfolio, publish it online, and get some constructive feedback. By the end of this nanocourse, you will have a clear vision of the existing available tools and what needs to be done to have an online presence. Ready for the challenge?
What will you learn?
*How to create a portfolio from scratch *How to present your content for a portfolio website *How to edit Markdown files
**Week 1: Preparation Time **
*What is the difference between a static and a dynamic website? *Walk-through Hugo framework and its current available themes *Decide on a suitable theme from the existing ones *Installation party and generation of the first portfolio draft *List (really, just make a list of) what other projects you want to include (recommended at least 4)
**Week 2: Learning Time **
*Add a title and a homepage *Let’s learn Markdown! 10 rules and a very cool system, you will love it :D *Create the pages listed during the previous class and give them appropriate names *Write your awesome, stunning, remarkable text *Working time — pictures, text, contact page
**Week 3: Testing Time **
*Prepare your website for deploying — what does it even mean?! *Deploying and testing, testing, testing *Send it to your family & friends for feedback *Is it fast enough? Do you understand what the product is about? How can make it better?
Week 4: It’s Show Time!
*Basic SEO optimisation, PageSpeed insights *Last tweaks, adjustments, what else needs to be done to have a stunning website? *Launch it onto the world wide web
What I won’t be teaching in this course: To code per se — this is a technical course, but you do not need to program in order to get your portfolio up and running
About the Facilitator
Oana Sipos is a tech enthusiast in love with education. All the activities she is involved with consist of bridging the two domains. She is a telecommunications engineer with a Master’s in Computer Science and has more than 7 years of experience in the software development industry.
